U.S. State Department Maintains Belgium at Level 2 in Updated Travel Advisory

    August 6, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has retained its travel warning for Belgium at Level 2, citing concerns over crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The advisory issued on July 23 continues to recommend increased caution for travelers. While crime and unrest have been added to the list of potential risks, the overall level has not been elevated. This guidance applies to Americans visiting Brussels, other Belgian cities, and major tourist destinations across the nation.

US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory
Belgium travelers should stay alert in tourist areas and transport hubs.

The updated notice emphasizes the risk of theft in crowded areas and transport systems. Pickpocketing incidents are common near railway stations, metro stops, restaurants, airports, and popular tourist spots. Travelers may also encounter purse snatching, stolen phones, and theft from parked vehicles. The advisory advises keeping passports, cash, and electronic devices secure while moving through public places and recommends avoiding leaving luggage or valuables unattended.

Special attention is given to rail travel, as thieves often target bags stored above seats or near train exits. Reports of theft have been noted on routes between Brussels and Amsterdam. Criminal groups may work together and employ distractions to steal wallets, phones, or small luggage items. Belgian Federal Police recommend keeping personal belongings close and monitoring them during station stops. Passengers should stay vigilant when boarding, disembarking, or navigating crowded train stations.

Transport centers and tourist zones receive heightened scrutiny

The terrorism section highlights the importance of caution around public gatherings, hotels, restaurants, shopping districts, and places of worship. Schools, parks, transportation networks, and major events are also flagged in the updated guidance. Belgium’s national threat level remains at Level 3 on a four-tier system. Authorities describe this rating as serious and reserve it for situations where threats are deemed possible and likely. Visitors are advised to follow security instructions closely and stay aware of their surroundings.

Protests and strikes can disrupt transportation and movement within Belgian cities, causing road closures, train delays, or interruptions to local transit. Police may restrict access to protest sites and redirect traffic unexpectedly. The advisory recommends avoiding demonstrations and staying informed about local conditions before embarking on any journey. Travelers should monitor updates from rail, bus, and metro services during large events or labor actions.

Essential safety measures include emergency contacts and trip preparation

The guidance suggests registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before or during travel. STEP provides security alerts and assists the U.S. Embassy in Brussels in reaching citizens during emergencies. It is also recommended to review entry requirements, local laws, and health information before departure. Carrying copies of passports and travel documents can facilitate quicker assistance in case of theft or loss. Family members or trusted contacts should also have access to the itinerary details.

In case of emergencies, Belgium’s emergency numbers are 112 for police, fire, and medical services, and 101 for local police. Travelers are advised to remain cautious near ticket machines, banks, and ATMs, especially in crowded areas. The updated Belgium travel advisory does not suggest avoiding the country altogether but emphasizes careful planning, belongings protection, and adherence to official guidance. The Level 2 alert remains in effect as the summer travel season persists.
