U.S. stocks fall as AI shares slide and oil prices rise

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – U.S. stocks closed lower Monday as artificial intelligence shares and chipmakers fell sharply. The S&P 500 lost 0.5% to 7,619.98. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 152.09 points, or 0.3%, to 52,421.20. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.6% to 26,186.41. Losses centered on technology, while gains across other industries limited the broader market decline. More S&P 500 stocks rose than fell during the session.

Nvidia fell 3.4% and ranked among the biggest drags on major U.S. indexes. The Philadelphia semiconductor index dropped 5.9%. Micron Technology, Broadcom and Advanced Micro Devices also declined during Monday trading. The moves followed public calls from several leading AI executives for slower development because of safety concerns. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei advocated a deliberate slowdown. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk also supported slowing development.

Several software companies moved higher even as semiconductor shares weakened. Intuit gained 5.5%, Autodesk rose 7.8% and Adobe advanced 5.3%. Those gains helped offset part of the pressure from Nvidia and other large AI-linked companies. The session produced a narrower decline for the S&P 500 than the technology selloff suggested. Bank shares were also mixed, while Bank of America fell 5.1% after its chief executive discussed lower investment banking fees.

    Oil prices remain above $100

Oil prices climbed again Tuesday as disruptions affecting Middle East energy infrastructure continued to pressure global supply routes. Brent crude rose about 1.2% to $106.96 a barrel during Asian trading. U.S. crude advanced about 1.3% to $102.68. Brent had settled Monday at $105.68 after approaching $110 earlier in the session. Attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure have disrupted a major pipeline, while shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply.

Higher oil prices have coincided with another rise in U.S. government bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield briefly moved above 5% Monday for the first time since 2023. It later eased to 4.98%, compared with 4.96% late Friday. The Federal Reserve starts a two-day policy meeting Tuesday and will announce its decision Wednesday. The Federal Reserve has maintained its benchmark federal funds target range at 3.5% to 3.75% since the start of 2026.

Global markets track oil and bond yields

Asian stock markets traded mixed Tuesday as investors tracked oil prices, bond yields and the previous Wall Street technology decline. Japan’s Nikkei rose about 0.2%, while South Korea’s Kospi slipped roughly 0.3%. The U.S. dollar also traded near a two-week high against major currencies. Brent crude remained above $106, keeping energy prices near their highest levels in months. Nvidia and other AI-linked companies remained central to global technology market moves after Monday’s sharp declines.

The Federal Reserve’s September meeting runs through Wednesday and includes updated economic projections. Its July statement said inflation remained above the central bank’s 2% goal and cited energy-related supply shocks. U.S. gasoline prices have also risen, with the national average nearing $4.32 a gallon. That compares with about $4.08 a month earlier and $3.18 a year earlier. U.S. markets enter Tuesday with oil above $100, Treasury yields near 5% and technology shares under renewed pressure.
