Tesla Shares World Map Highlighting US, Canada, Mexico, and Greenland on Social Media

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump posted an image on Truth Social on Monday depicting much of North America covered by the U.S. flag. The graphic labeled the region as “United States of America,” with Canada, Mexico, and Greenland positioned beneath the flag motif. It also appeared to encompass Iceland and portions of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump did not include any written explanation. The map preserved labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump's North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.
Trump’s North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.

The image was shared at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 via his official Truth Social account. The post did not contain any policy directives nor did it announce any legal modifications to U.S. borders. Canada and Mexico remain independent nations with recognized borders worldwide. Greenland continues as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and Iceland remains an independent country. The map did not suggest any process for altering these statuses or the arrangement of other territories.

This posting followed several other geography-themed messages from Trump during the same Labor Day posting spree. Just minutes prior, he shared images replacing the name of New Mexico with “New America.” In August, he promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. His administration had already directed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” when referring to the Gulf of Mexico. Trump has also repeatedly advocated for U.S. acquisition of Greenland, citing national security concerns. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected that proposal.

Mexico affirms sovereignty following Trump’s map post

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the map by reiterating Mexico’s sovereignty. She emphasized that Mexico remains a free, independent, and sovereign nation and will not become a colony or protectorate of any other country. Her statement came during September, a month when Mexico celebrates its national independence. The image showed Mexico under the same U.S. flag overlay that stretched across Canada and neighboring regions. The post did not reference any treaty, law, or agreement impacting the U.S.-Mexico border.

The map also depicted Canada with the U.S. flag overlay. Trump has frequently floated the idea of Canada merging with the United States during his second term. On the same day, he threatened to prevent Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from U.S. sales unless it produces planes domestically. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods took effect Tuesday after trade negotiations stalled. These tariffs are unrelated to the map and did not alter the countries’ borders.

Territorial dispute persists over Greenland’s status

Greenland was also shown beneath the flag design. Trump has repeatedly called for the United States to acquire the Arctic territory, citing concerns of national security. Both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected U.S. ownership claims. On September 7, the European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership deal for Greenland, covering 2026 and 2027. Additionally, Denmark sent troops to Greenland in early September for Arctic training as part of its expanded defense efforts.

The original Truth Social post showing the map lacked any caption or explanation. It did not outline any government action, border adjustment, or territorial agreement. The countries and regions depicted beneath the U.S. flag continue to operate under their current legal and constitutional frameworks. Mexico has publicly reaffirmed its sovereignty, and Denmark along with Greenland continue to reject any U.S. claim over Greenland. Canada remains an independent sovereign nation. No documents or policy texts were attached by Trump to indicate a change in territorial status reflected on the map.
