Dollar Index Declines 0.25% From 18-Month Peak Amid Market Caution

    October 16, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, October 13, the U.S. Dollar Index decreased by 0.25% to reach 102.27, retreating from its highest point in 18 months. The index, which measures the dollar’s performance against six major currencies, had surged to 102.61 on Monday, marking its strongest level since April 2025. The decline was influenced by falling oil prices and a reassessment of the rally driven by artificial intelligence optimism. Investors remained cautious, awaiting new signals regarding the future trajectory of US interest rates.

Crude oil prices declined 0.86%, settling at $105.75 per barrel during Tuesday’s trading session. Market participants considered the potential increase in Russian diesel exports, as Moscow indicated it might restore diesel shipments above the levels previously agreed upon with US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, traders also anticipate that Trump will refrain from escalating tensions in the Middle East before the upcoming midterm elections next month. Last week, Trump stated that the US would not attack Iran before the vote and mentioned an energy ceasefire involving Russia and Ukraine on Sunday.

The recent rise in oil prices had previously supported the dollar against both the euro and the yen. These currencies are tied to economies that depend more heavily on imported oil than the US. According to BNY strategist John Velis, the slight decrease in oil prices has contributed to the dollar’s modest weakening. He also noted that major bank earnings reports showed mixed results, while bond yields traded slightly below recent peaks. Earlier in October, the dollar reached a 17-month high following a surge in Treasury yields.

Euro Recovers from May’s Lowest Levels

The euro gained 0.3% to trade at $1.1189 on Tuesday, having fallen to $1.11525 a day earlier — the lowest since May 2025. This rebound occurred despite ongoing concerns about rising gas prices, a key factor in eurozone inflation, and worries over France’s fiscal health. Against the Japanese yen, the euro increased 0.21% to 177.32 yen, while the yen itself strengthened 0.15% to 158.38 per dollar.

The Australian dollar traded at $0.6979 following the release of the minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s recent policy meeting. The document revealed that all board members unanimously supported a fourth rate hike this year, with the September increase raising the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%. Analysts also expressed growing skepticism about the AI-driven investment narrative boosting demand for US assets. Corpay chief market strategist Karl Schamotta commented that the US’s exceptionalism trade had become too stretched and was vulnerable to a technical correction.

Federal Reserve Rate Outlook Influences Next Dollar Moves

Investors are now focusing on the upcoming September Consumer Price Index, set to be released on Wednesday, as a gauge for possible further Fed rate hikes. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, there’s roughly an 80% chance that rates will remain unchanged at the October 27-28 meeting, compared to a 51% chance a month prior. Market expectations include about 75 basis points of tightening by late 2027. The Fed already implemented a rate hike in September. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller stated that inflation expectations are still well anchored.

Inflation data released on Wednesday exceeded expectations, pushing the dollar index to an 18-month high. However, on Thursday, October 15, the greenback retraced some gains, falling 0.44% to 102.00, while the euro recovered to $1.1210. Officials including Michelle Bowman and Mary Daly indicated that the Fed might wait for more clarity before making further moves. Market participants are now awaiting Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok on Friday.
