Gold Gains as Treasury Yields Retreat Ahead of Fed Minutes Release

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Gold experienced a slight upward movement during Asian trading hours on Wednesday as U.S. Treasury yields eased from recent peaks. At 0030 GMT, spot gold increased by 0.2% to $4,342.33 an ounce, rebounding after a nearly 2% decline on Tuesday. Meanwhile, December U.S. gold futures dropped 0.6% to $4,396.30 an ounce. The rally highlighted the ongoing focus on interest-rate expectations in bullion trading. The Federal Reserve has scheduled the release of minutes from its July policy meeting at 1800 GMT on Wednesday.

Gold rises as Treasury yields ease before Fed minutes
Gold markets track Treasury yields and Federal Reserve rate expectations.

Gold had retreated on Tuesday following two consecutive days of gains. The spot price fell 1.1% to $4,364.90 an ounce by 1733 GMT, with December futures closing 1.2% lower at $4,420.60. A global selloff in bonds pushed long-term borrowing costs in several major economies to levels not seen in decades. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3371% on Tuesday, its highest in nearly two decades, before easing to around 5.28% during Asian trading on Wednesday.

Markets anticipating interest-rate hikes continued to show reduced expectations for a September increase. According to CME FedWatch data, there is a 65% chance that policymakers will hold rates steady next month, while traders assigned a 35% probability to a quarter-point hike. Lower projected rates generally boost gold, as bullion does not generate interest. Recent U.S. data also pointed to unexpected job losses, subdued inflation, and weaker retail sales in July, which collectively lessened market expectations for an immediate rate increase.

Focus on Fed Minutes Highlights Policy Divisions

On July 29, the Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%. The Federal Open Market Committee approved the decision by a 9-3 vote, with Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan favoring a quarter-point increase. The committee noted that economic activity was growing at a solid rate despite high uncertainty. It also indicated that inflation remained above its 2% goal, partly due to supply shocks raising prices in sectors such as energy. Job gains kept pace with workforce growth, and unemployment rates changed little.

These internal disagreements drew more attention to the July meeting’s record. Chairman Kevin Warsh led the gathering, his second policy session as Fed chair. The July statement mentioned that the central bank would continue maintaining ample reserves in the banking system. The next policy meeting is scheduled from September 15 to September 16, during which officials will review economic and financial conditions and set the appropriate target range based on the central bank’s monetary policy framework.

Bond Market Movements Continue to Influence Gold Prices

Treasury yields remained a significant factor in precious metals trading after Tuesday’s notable rise. Increased yields tend to raise the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not generate interest income. Oil prices also stayed elevated, adding another inflation-sensitive element to market dynamics. Early Wednesday saw mixed trading in other precious metals, with spot silver down 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, platinum up 0.3% at $1,717.03, and palladium decreasing 0.3% to $1,286.73, continuing the uneven pattern across the metals complex.

Gold’s position heading into Wednesday followed a volatile August after a relatively flat July. According to the World Gold Council, global gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded $3 billion in net inflows in July. Total holdings increased by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons, with assets under management rising 1% to $530 billion. The early Wednesday rebound only partially offset Tuesday’s decline. Market focus remained on rate expectations, Treasury yields, and U.S. monetary policy, which continue to be key influences on the gold market.
