Southern California’s record October streak continues due to heat wave, says company

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – The ongoing heat wave in Southern California has driven downtown Los Angeles to reach 101°F on Tuesday, maintaining an extraordinary run of triple-digit temperatures. This marks the fifth consecutive day with temperatures at or above 100°F in downtown Los Angeles. The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings that remain in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for coastal and valley regions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Additionally, forecasts indicate that unusually hot conditions will persist in parts of Santa Barbara County.

Southern California heat wave extends record October streak
Southern California heat keeps Los Angeles far above normal before a weekend cooldown.

Monday experienced some of the most intense heat of this period. Downtown Los Angeles hit 104°F, surpassing the October 5 record of 101°F set in 1953 and matched in 1971. Woodland Hills reached 106°F, while Long Beach and Anaheim each hit 104°F. Los Angeles International Airport recorded 101°F. The widespread temperature records demonstrate that the heat extended from inland valleys to typically milder coastal areas, reducing the usual temperature disparity across the region.

Tuesday offered only limited relief. According to official climate data, downtown Los Angeles remained 21 degrees above its normal October 6 high of 80°F. Burbank Airport also reached 101°F, about 20 degrees above its typical high. Many communities experienced elevated overnight temperatures, which hindered recovery from repeated hot afternoons. The persistent warmth has heightened concerns about heat-related illnesses during one of the region’s longest and most unusual October heat spells.

Heat advisories stay in effect through Thursday

A dominant ridge of high pressure has fueled the prolonged Southern California heat wave. Sinking air has contributed to the warming of the region, while weak offshore and downslope flows have reduced the cooling effect typically provided by the Pacific Ocean. Warm coastal waters have further limited the marine layer and sea breeze strength, allowing the heat to linger near beaches and inland areas alike. Temperatures remain significantly above seasonal averages across much of the area.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recommended residents stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and use air-conditioned spaces whenever available. Officials also urged residents to check on vulnerable groups such as older adults and children, who face higher heat risks. Warm nights contribute additional strain, as homes and bodies have less time to cool down. Cooling centers are still open throughout Los Angeles County for those seeking relief from the heat.

Cooling trend expected to arrive in Southern California by weekend

Forecasts anticipate a gradual decrease in temperatures late Thursday, with more noticeable relief by the weekend. Wednesday will still see hot conditions in downtown Los Angeles, with highs near the upper 90s. Burbank may approach 101°F again before temperatures start to decline. By the weekend, many areas are expected to experience temperatures closer to normal seasonal levels, with highs in the 70s and 80s across several communities. There is also a possibility of light showers developing by Sunday as the weather pattern shifts.

Coastal hazards are adding to the concerns during the final days of this heat wave. Elevated surf and strong rip currents are forecasted along portions of the Southern California coast. A coastal flood advisory remains in effect for vulnerable areas of the Ventura County coast through Friday. Beaches, harbor walkways, and parking areas near low-lying regions may encounter minor flooding during high tides. The combination of ongoing heat, warm nights, and coastal hazards has made early October particularly disruptive throughout the region, even as cooler weather looms.
